Where should you propose to your favorite person of all time? Where do you ask someone to marry you? It’s a personal decision. Where ever you decide to propose, one option is to have a photographer on hand to document the momentous occasion. It takes a little planning and coordination with your photographer to make it happen without tipping your partner off to your plans, but it’s totally doable. I photograph proposals quite a bit. There are essentially two ways to go about it.

The first way works like this:

I arrive to our location before you arrive. When you get there, you’ll see me waiting for you in the parking area. Once I can tell you’re both all set. I’ll walk past you and, unbeknownst to your partner, lead you to a great spot, in great light, for you to propose. I’m able to photograph the moment. Once you’ve proposed and let all the emotions run wild and free, you let your now fiance know I’m there to document the moment and then we make some more really amazing engagement photos. Super fun!

The second way goes like this:

If you’re the kind of couple that has been known to book a photo shoot now and then, you could suggest a couples photo shoot while you’re at the Grand Canyon, Sedona or Horseshoe Bend. Or anywhere else for that matter. We start the session and then, when you’re comfortable and you guys are situated in good light, you propose. And I’m right there to document the moment. As you can see, this method requires less sneaking around on my part. Both options work great.

Mark went with option two. He and Asia have been known to book a photo shoot when they’re in an interesting area as a part of their travels. So I met them in the parking lot at Bell Rock in Sedona and we headed out to explore and make some rad photos. And then he proposed. And it was amazing! And then we tromped around some more making fun images as the sun set. Pretty nice. Enjoy!
